20 Varieties of Tayto’s… and Tayto’s

The information on this post has been updated.

In 1954, Joe ‘Spud’ Murphy founded Tayto Crisps. He created the first flavoured crisp: Cheese & Onion, produced in a factory on Moore Street, Dublin. His technique became widely sought after by crisp manufacturers. Cheese & Onion flavour crisps have been popular ever since, and are consistently the #1 choice in Ireland and Great Britain.

There was even a theme park, ‘Tayto Park’, which opened in 2010 – visitors were given a complimentary bag of Tayto crisps at the exit. It was recently rebranded Emerald Park – a nod to Ireland’s nickname ‘The Emerald Isle’, and the last free bags of Tayto crisps were handed out on 23 December 2022.

A separate company, Tayto Limited, was created two years later in Northern Ireland. Founded by Thomas Hutchinson, it used the Tayto name and recipes under licence. The two companies operated entirely separately but had a similar range of products.

This list has flavours from both Tayto Crisps and Tayto Limited (now Tayto Group).

  1. This information is wrong, the tayto displayed in the picture are northern irish tayto and where 1st made in 1956. Not the same as the real 1954 Republic of Ireland tayto
